★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

Our MondoKing 3D is the ultimate car camping and basecamp sleeping pad for those who refuse to compromise on comfort. With 4 inches of vertical sidewall construction and self-inflating StrataCore™ foam, you get the plush feel of a home mattress combined with the warmth and packability only we can deliver.

We designed this pad for campers who drive to their site and want real sleep after a long day on the trail or water. The horizontal core foam creates loft and warmth while keeping weight reasonable for a pad this thick. R-value 8.0 means you stay warm even when temps drop well below freezing, and the included stuff sack doubles as a pump for faster setup.

StrataCore™ Foam & Vertical Sidewall Design

The Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D uses our proprietary StrataCore foam — a horizontal coring pattern that removes weight while maintaining structural integrity and warmth. Instead of a solid foam slab, we precision-cut channels that allow the pad to compress for packing yet spring back to full 4-inch height when you open the valve.

Vertical sidewalls run the full perimeter, preventing the roll-off feeling common on tapered pads. You get a stable, flat sleeping surface edge to edge. The combination of air chambers and foam creates a sleeping experience closer to a traditional mattress than any ultralight inflatable can match, which is why car campers and basecamp users choose this pad over thinner alternatives.

R-Value 8.0 & Four-Season Insulation

Tested Warmth for Extreme Cold

We rate the MondoKing 3D at R-value 8.0 using the ASTM F3340-18 standard, meaning it insulates you from ground temperatures down to -40°F when paired with an appropriate sleeping bag. The foam core traps dead air in thousands of cells, and the thickness alone creates substantial distance between you and frozen ground.

Winter campers rely on this pad for snow camping, ice fishing shelters, and high-altitude basecamps where a cold night can ruin a trip. Even if you camp primarily in warmer months, the insulation prevents ground chill on cool spring and fall evenings when temps swing unexpectedly.

Self-Inflating Setup & Pack Size

Open the brass valve and watch the Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D expand to 80% of full loft in about 3 minutes as the foam core draws air into the chambers. A few breaths or 10-15 pumps with the included stuff sack tops it off to your preferred firmness. We build each valve with a one-way design so you can add air without losing pressure, and a quick quarter-turn seals everything for the night.

Packed, the Regular size rolls to 26 x 9 inches and weighs 4 lbs 6 oz — manageable for any vehicle but too large for backpacking. We designed this pad for car camping, canoe trips, and RV users who want home-level comfort without the bulk of a queen air mattress.

“
Best sleep I've had in a tent
I'm a side sleeper and most pads leave me sore. The MondoKing is thick enough that I don't bottom out on my hip, and it stays warm even when we camp in October. Worth every penny for car camping.

Finally ditched the air mattress
We used to haul a queen air mattress and pump. This pad sets up faster, packs smaller, and doesn't deflate overnight. My wife was skeptical about the width but the XL gives us both plenty of room.

Warm enough for snow camping
Took this to Yellowstone in January and slept on packed snow. I stayed warm all night in my 0-degree bag. The foam doesn't lose insulation like inflatables can if you get a slow leak.

Heavy but worth it for comfort
It's definitely not a backpacking pad, but I knew that going in. For canoe camping and car trips, the weight doesn't matter and I get hotel-quality sleep. Only downside is it takes up trunk space.

Stuff sack pump is clever
I love that the stuff sack doubles as a pump. It's way faster than blowing it up by mouth, and I don't get lightheaded. The pad inflates most of the way on its own, then a few pumps and it's ready.

No more waking up with a sore back
I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs, and thinner pads always left me aching in the morning. The MondoKing has enough cushion that I sleep through the night. Setup is easy and it's held up for two years of heavy use.

Good to know

MondoKing 3D Questions from Campers

The pad self-inflates to about 80% loft in 3 to 5 minutes after you open the valve. For full firmness, add 10 to 15 breaths by mouth or use the included stuff sack as a pump, which takes about 30 seconds. Total setup time is under 5 minutes from rolled to sleep-ready.

We don't recommend it. The Regular size packs to 26 x 9 inches and weighs 4 lbs 6 oz, which is too bulky for most backpacks. This pad excels at car camping, canoe trips, and basecamps where you drive or paddle to your site. For backpacking, consider our ProLite Plus or NeoAir series instead.

The MondoKing 3D uses vertical sidewalls and StrataCore foam for a 4-inch loft and flat sleeping surface edge to edge. The original MondoKing has a more traditional tapered design. The 3D version is slightly heavier but eliminates roll-off and provides better edge support for side sleepers.

Yes. The R-value 8.0 rating means the pad insulates you from ground temperatures down to -40°F when paired with an appropriate sleeping bag. We've tested it in snow camping conditions and high-altitude winter basecamps. The foam core traps air in thousands of cells and the 4-inch thickness creates substantial distance from frozen ground.

Open the valve fully and press down on the pad starting at the opposite end, forcing air out. Roll tightly toward the valve, squeezing out remaining air as you go. Once rolled, close the valve and secure with the attached straps. The pad compresses to about one-third of its inflated size and fits in the included stuff sack.

Every Therm-a-Rest sleeping pad is backed by our lifetime warranty. If you experience a manufacturing defect at any point, contact us and we'll repair or replace it. Normal wear like abrasion or punctures from sharp objects isn't covered, but we include a repair kit with every pad so you can fix field damage yourself.

Yes. Our Universal Pad Coupler snaps onto the edges of two MondoKing pads and holds them together so they don't separate overnight. Many couples use two Regular or XL pads side by side with a coupler to create a seamless double bed for car camping.
