Invented the Self-Inflating Pad. Still Perfecting It.
Therm-a-Rest was born in a garage in Seattle when three former Boeing engineers set out to solve a problem every camper knew too well — cold, hard ground stealing a night’s sleep. The result was the world’s first self-inflating mattress, and it changed backcountry sleeping forever.
Every pad, quilt, pillow, and sleeping bag we make today carries that same obsession: rigorous testing in the North Cascades, patented WingLock™ and TwinLock™ valves, ThermaCapture™ reflective coatings, and constructions honed by the guides, alpinists, and long-trail hikers who trust us on their hardest nights out.
This is our official storefront. Every product below is a genuine Therm-a-Rest® piece, shipped and backed by the brand you already know from the trail.
Shop the Full RangeWhat Makes a Therm-a-Rest a Therm-a-Rest
Four engineering principles show up in every pad, pillow, and quilt we build — from the ultralight NeoAir XLite NXT to the roll-and-go Z Lite Sol.
Real R-Value Warmth
Every pad is lab-tested to the ASTM F3340 standard, so the R-value on the tag is the R-value on the trail.
Backpack-Friendly Weight
NeoAir® pads pack down smaller than a Nalgene and weigh under a pound — no compromise on comfort.
WingLock™ Valves
Three-times-faster inflation and deflation than a standard camping-pad valve, engineered in-house.
Field & Home Repair
Our Instant Field Repair Kit fixes a punctured pad in minutes — so gear stays out of the landfill.
Trusted On Big Nights Out
“I’ve slept on my NeoAir XLite NXT for 140+ nights on the PCT and it still holds air like day one. The R-value 4.5 got me through cold Sierra passes with a 20-degree quilt. It’s the single best gear decision I made for the trail.”
“The Z Lite Sol is the pad I recommend to every first-timer on my guided trips. It’s bulletproof, it doubles as a sit pad at lunch, and it’s still going strong after three seasons of hard use. Real gear that just works.”
Therm-a-Rest® Buying Questions, Answered
Which Therm-a-Rest sleeping pad is right for backpacking?
For three-season backpacking, the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT is our go-to — 3 inches of loft, R-value 4.5, and it packs smaller than a water bottle. If you’re heading into shoulder-season or winter conditions, step up to the NeoAir XTherm NXT (R-value 7.3). Prefer the reliability of foam? The Z Lite Sol is impossible to puncture and takes 30 seconds to deploy.
What does R-value mean, and what should I look for?
R-value measures how well a pad resists heat loss to the ground. Higher R-value = warmer sleep. For summer trips, R 2–3 is enough. For three-season use, aim for R 4+. For winter, alpine, or snow camping, choose an R-value of 5 or higher. All Therm-a-Rest pads are tested to the industry-standard ASTM F3340 so numbers are directly comparable across brands.
How do the NeoAir XLite NXT and NeoAir XTherm NXT compare?
Both share our 3-inch triangular core construction and WingLock™ valve. The XLite NXT is the lightest three-season option (R-value 4.5). The XTherm NXT adds an extra layer of ThermaCapture™ reflective film to hit R-value 7.3 for cold-weather use, at only a small weight penalty. Pick the XLite for summer and shoulder season; pick the XTherm if you camp year-round.
Can Therm-a-Rest pads be repaired in the field?
Yes. Every air-construction pad ships with a small patch, and our Instant Field Repair Kit permanently seals punctures in minutes without glue. For home repairs on older pads, the Permanent Home Repair Kit and WingLock Valve Repair Kit handle valve and seam issues. A well-cared-for Therm-a-Rest pad routinely lasts a decade or more.
Do I need a camping pillow or is a stuff sack fine?
A packable pillow makes a much bigger difference to sleep quality than most campers expect. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a shredded-foam classic that feels closer to a home pillow, while the Air Head Down Pillow is the choice for ultralight backpackers who count grams. Side sleepers should also consider the Lumbar Pillow for support.
Where can I buy authentic Therm-a-Rest gear?
You’re in the right place. Every product on this storefront links to a genuine Therm-a-Rest listing fulfilled through Amazon — real warranty, real customer support, and the same pads the brand ships to REI, EMS, and specialty shops. Shop with confidence.
