Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow
Our Compressible Pillow brings the comfort of your favorite couch cushion to remote campsites and alpine bivouacs. Inside, soft urethane foam expands to deliver plush support that cradles your head after long miles on the trail. The brushed polyester cover feels instantly familiar against your cheek—no slippery synthetic fabric or crinkly rustling when you shift position during the night.
We designed this pillow for backpackers and campers who refuse to compromise on sleep quality. It compresses down to fit easily in your pack, then springs back to full loft when you pull it from the stuff sack. Available in three sizes to match your sleep style and pack volume priorities.
Construction & comfort details

Foam construction & compression performance
The therm-a-rest compressible pillow relies on open-cell urethane foam that compresses tightly when rolled and rebounds fully when released. Unlike closed-cell foams that resist compression, our urethane formula lets you squeeze the pillow down to roughly one-third its resting volume. The integrated stuff sack cinches tight with a drawcord, keeping the pillow compact in your pack’s main compartment or lashed to the outside.
When you make camp, pull the pillow from the sack and give it a few minutes to expand. The foam recovers its original thickness without any pumping or blowing. This makes setup effortless when you’re exhausted from a summit push or a twenty-mile approach. The foam density balances softness with durability—it won’t bottom out under the weight of your head, and it springs back night after night without losing loft.

Cover fabric & sleep surface feel
We use a brushed polyester cover because it mimics the feel of cotton pillowcases while weighing far less and drying faster. The fabric has a soft hand that doesn’t stick to your skin or generate static when you move. You won’t hear the crinkle or swish common with nylon shells—important when light sleepers share a tent.
The cover zips off for machine washing. After dusty desert trips or humid rainforest camps, toss the cover in with your base layers and it comes out fresh. The foam core stays clean longer because the removable shell takes the brunt of oils and dirt. For trips where weight truly matters, the small cinch-style design we make uses the same foam and fabric but omits the stuff sack to save an ounce.
Size selection & fit with sleeping pads
Choosing the right dimensions
Small (10 × 16 inches, 6 oz) works for ultralight hikers willing to trade some surface area for pack space. Medium (14 × 18 inches, 9 oz) suits most side sleepers and back sleepers who want full head coverage. Large (16 × 23 inches, 13 oz) accommodates broader shoulders and people who shift position frequently. X-Large (17 × 27 inches, 16 oz) is built for car camping and canoe trips where weight doesn’t dictate gear choices.
Pairing with sleeping pads
The Compressible Pillow sits securely on any sleeping pad surface—foam, inflatable, or self-inflating. The polyester cover grips textured pad fabrics without slipping, and the pillow’s width matches the shoulder width of our standard pads. If you use a NeoAir or ProLite pad, the medium pillow centers perfectly across the pad’s upper third. For mummy-shaped pads with tapered heads, the small size prevents overhang that can cause the pillow to slide off in the night.

Common questions about the Compressible Pillow
The foam rebounds to full loft within two to three minutes after you remove it from the stuff sack. In cold conditions it may take slightly longer as the foam warms up. Giving it a few light squeezes speeds up the process by helping air flow into the foam cells.
Absolutely. Many travelers use it on long flights and road trips because it compresses small enough to fit in a daypack and provides much better support than airline pillows. The stuff sack also doubles as a storage pouch when you’re not using the pillow, so it stays clean in transit.
The urethane foam is designed to withstand thousands of compression cycles without permanent deformation. To maximize lifespan, store the pillow uncompressed between trips. If you notice reduced loft after extended use, airing it out in the sun for a few hours can help restore some spring to the foam.
Yes, every size from small to extra-large has a zippered cover that removes completely for washing. The zipper runs along one edge of the pillow and is easy to operate even with cold hands in camp.
The Cinch version uses the same foam and cover but replaces the integrated stuff sack with compression straps that cinch the pillow tight. This saves about an ounce and reduces packed bulk slightly. The regular version is easier to compress quickly and keeps the pillow more protected in your pack.
The brushed polyester cover grips most pad surfaces well, including smooth inflatables. If you’re a very active sleeper, you can tuck the bottom edge of the pillow under your sleeping pad or use a small gear strap to anchor it. Most users find it stays put without extra measures.
Yes, the pillow is TSA-compliant and can go in either checked or carry-on bags. Since it contains no liquids or pressurized components, there are no restrictions. Compress it fully in the stuff sack to save luggage space.
