Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow Cinch
The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow Cinch is our first self-adjusting foam camping pillow that lets you cinch down the loft to match your sleeping position. Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, a simple pull of the integrated drawcord tailors the height and firmness in seconds.
Our expanded foam core delivers the plush, at-home feel you expect from a compressible pillow while packing down smaller than previous models. The soft-brushed polyester cover wicks moisture and feels gentle against your skin after long trail days. We built this pillow for backpackers and minimalist campers who refuse to compromise on sleep quality but need every ounce and cubic inch to count.
What makes this pillow adjustable

How the cinch system works
The integrated drawcord runs through a channel along the pillow’s perimeter, letting you compress the foam core to your exact preference. Pull the cord to reduce loft for stomach sleeping or release it completely for full 5.5-inch height when you’re on your side.
Unlike fixed-height foam pillows, this system eliminates the need to carry multiple pillows or fold a single pillow into awkward shapes. The cord locks with a simple toggle, so your setting holds all night without gradual expansion. We designed the channel to distribute compression evenly across the foam, preventing lumps or dead spots that can form when you manually compress a standard pillow.

Packed size and weight
The Medium Compressible Pillow Cinch weighs 7.8 ounces and compresses to roughly the size of a Nalgene bottle. That’s 20 percent smaller than our original Compressible Pillow in the same size class, thanks to the foam’s higher compression ratio.
The included stuff sack has a built-in compression strap that lets you cinch the packed pillow down even further for tight pack configurations. Strap the compressed pillow to the outside of your pack or tuck it into a side pocket—it won’t expand until you release the drawcord. For ultralight trips where every ounce matters, the Small size drops to 5.2 ounces while still providing 12 × 16 inches of surface area.
Fabric and durability
We cover the foam core in a 50-denier brushed polyester that balances softness with abrasion resistance. The fabric receives a durable water-repellent treatment to shed condensation and light moisture from tent walls.
The cover zips off completely for machine washing, which extends the pillow’s lifespan and keeps it fresh on multi-week trips. Many thru-hikers carry foam pillows because inflatable models puncture easily—our fabric choice reinforces that reliability while maintaining the compressibility foam is known for. The same construction philosophy found in our self-inflating and ultralight pillow designs carries over here, with reinforced stitching at stress points and a double-layer bottom panel where the pillow contacts your sleeping pad.

Questions about the Compressible Pillow Cinch
The Compressible Pillow Cinch uses expanded foam instead of an air bladder, so it feels more like your pillow at home and won't deflate if punctured. Inflatable pillows pack slightly smaller and weigh less, but many campers find foam more comfortable for side sleeping because it doesn't shift or lose pressure overnight. The cinch system bridges the gap by letting you compress the foam to a size closer to inflatables while keeping that plush foam feel.
Yes. Tightening the drawcord compresses the foam core, which increases firmness and reduces loft at the same time. If you want a firmer feel without losing height, cinch the cord partway—this firms up the foam without fully collapsing it. Full-tightening gives you the firmest, lowest profile for stomach sleepers or minimalist setups.
Medium (14 × 18 inches) works for most backpackers and fits well in 40–65 liter packs. Large (16 × 23 inches) suits side sleepers who need extra width or anyone who moves around a lot at night. Small (12 × 16 inches) is designed for ultralight trips where weight and pack space are critical. If you're between sizes, go larger—you can always cinch down the loft, but you can't add surface area.
The polyester cover unzips completely so you can machine wash it separately from the foam core. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low. The foam itself should only be spot-cleaned with mild soap and water, then air-dried completely before re-inserting it into the cover.
The cord lock toggle holds tension reliably through the night. We've tested it on multi-week trips and haven't seen the loft creep back up once the cord is locked. If your toggle ever wears out or loses grip, contact our warranty service for a free replacement part.
The foam rebounds to full loft within 30 seconds of removing it from the stuff sack. Unlike self-inflating pads that need several minutes, the Compressible Pillow Cinch is ready to use as soon as you pull it out. Adjust the cinch cord to your preferred height and you're set.
The pillow doesn't have built-in attachment loops, but it pairs well with our Pillow Keeper accessory, which creates a sleeve that holds any pillow against your pad. Many campers also tuck the pillow inside their sleeping bag hood or use a buff wrapped around both the pillow and pad to prevent sliding.
