Therm-a-Rest Parsec 20F Sleeping Bag

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

The Parsec 20F is our three-season down sleeping bag engineered for backpackers who refuse to choose between warmth and weight. We filled it with 650-fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down that resists moisture and maintains loft even in damp conditions. The SynergyLink Connectors integrate your sleeping bag with any Therm-a-Rest mattress, eliminating the cold gaps and midnight shifting that plague traditional mummy bags.

Every detail targets efficiency. The box-baffled construction prevents down migration. The full-length zipper includes a draft tube and anti-snag slider. The adjustable hood cinches around your face to seal in warmth without feeling restrictive. We built the Parsec for alpine starts, shoulder-season trips, and anyone who counts ounces but still expects a full night's sleep at 20°F.

Nikwax Hydrophobic Down technology

We treat every cluster of down in the Parsec with Nikwax Hydrophobic technology, a water-repellent process applied at the molecular level. Standard down absorbs moisture from condensation, rain, or humid air and clumps into useless lumps. Hydrophobic down sheds water before it penetrates the plume structure, maintaining 90% of its loft even after exposure to damp conditions.

The treatment also accelerates drying time by up to 60% compared to untreated down. On multi-day trips where you’re packing a wet bag in the morning, this means your insulation recovers faster once you pitch camp. The 650-fill power rating strikes the balance between warmth-to-weight and durability—higher fill counts compress more but cost more and wear faster under field use.

SynergyLink mattress integration

The SynergyLink Connectors are snap loops sewn into the footbox and torso of the Parsec that attach directly to compatible Therm-a-Rest sleeping pads. Once connected, your bag and pad move as one unit. You eliminate the two most common sleep disruptors: rolling off your pad in the night and cold air pockets forming between your bag and the ground.

The system works with our NeoAir and ProLite pad lines—any model with SynergyLink snap points. The connection is tool-free and takes three seconds to engage or release. During testing, integrated sleepers reported 40% fewer nighttime adjustments compared to traditional setups. If you’re using a non-compatible pad, the Parsec functions perfectly as a standalone bag; the connectors tuck away and don’t interfere with performance.

Styling

Box-baffle construction and zoned insulation

We use a box-baffle architecture throughout the Parsec, creating individual chambers that trap down in place and prevent it from shifting toward the foot or gathering along seams. Each baffle measures approximately 5 inches wide, narrow enough to maintain even loft but wide enough to avoid excessive seam weight.

The torso and hood carry slightly more fill than the lower body to account for your core’s higher heat loss. The footbox is reinforced with a trapezoidal shape that gives your feet room to splay naturally without creating excess dead air space. A full-length draft tube runs behind the zipper from chin to hip, and the zipper itself is insulated to prevent cold spots along that seam. These details add 2 ounces to the total weight but deliver measurable warmth gains in the 25–30°F range where most three-season trips happen.

Warmest 20-degree bag I've owned
I slept in this at 18°F on a late-October trip in the Cascades and stayed warm all night. The hood adjustment is excellent—cinches tight without feeling like a straightjacket. The bag arrived lofted perfectly out of the box.

SynergyLink is a game-changer
I was skeptical about the mattress clips, but they genuinely work. I used to wake up three or four times a night when I'd roll off my pad. With the Parsec clipped in, I slept through until morning every night of a five-day trip.

Great bag, slightly heavy for ultralight trips
This is my go-to for anything where comfort matters more than shaving ounces. It's 4 ounces heavier than my ultralight quilt, but the integrated hood and draft protection are worth it when temps drop below 25°F.

Nikwax down held up in wet conditions
We got caught in rain for two days and everything in my pack was damp. The Parsec still lofted that night and kept me warm. I've used untreated down bags before and they turn into cold, lumpy messes after moisture exposure.

Perfect fit for side sleepers
I'm a side sleeper and most mummy bags feel like sleeping in a tube. The Parsec has enough room in the shoulders and knees that I can shift positions without the fabric pulling tight. No more waking up with numb arms.

Quality construction throughout
Every detail is dialed—the zipper glides smoothly, the baffles are evenly filled, the stuff sack has reinforced stitching. I've put 40 nights on this bag and it looks and performs like new. Worth every penny.

Good to know

Common questions about the Parsec 20F

We recommend pairing the Parsec 20F with a sleeping pad rated R-4.0 or higher to achieve the full 20°F comfort rating. Your sleeping bag only insulates above your body; the pad provides critical insulation from ground cold. An R-3.0 pad will work in milder conditions, but expect the system limit to rise to around 28–30°F. For reliable 20°F performance, use an R-4.5 or higher pad like our NeoAir XLite NXT or NeoAir XTherm.

The Parsec uses 650-fill down and weighs 2 lbs 4 oz, while the Hyperion uses 900-fill down and weighs 1 lb 5 oz. The Hyperion is 15 ounces lighter and packs smaller, making it ideal for ultralight trips where every ounce counts. The Parsec is more durable, warmer in real-world conditions due to higher total fill weight, and costs $100 less. Choose the Hyperion for fast-and-light missions, the Parsec for general three-season backpacking where comfort and reliability matter.

Yes, with the right layering and pad. The EN lower limit is 11°F, meaning warm sleepers can push it into that range. Add a sleeping bag liner, wear insulated layers, and use a high R-value pad to extend the range. We've tested the Parsec down to 15°F with a fleece liner and insulated pad with good results. For consistent use below 15°F, consider our Oberon 0F or Parsec 0F models, which carry significantly more insulation.

Absolutely, especially if you camp in humid climates or encounter unpredictable weather. Hydrophobic down maintains loft when exposed to moisture from condensation, rain, or wet gear. It also dries 60% faster than untreated down. On multi-day trips where you're packing a damp bag in the morning, the treatment ensures your insulation recovers by evening. Untreated down absorbs water, clumps, and loses most of its insulating ability until fully dried.

The Parsec ships with a waterproof compression stuff sack for travel and a large breathable cotton storage bag for long-term storage at home. The compression sack reduces packed volume to approximately 8 x 16 inches. We include a printed care guide and warranty card. The SynergyLink Connectors are integrated into the bag and require no additional hardware.

Use a front-loading washing machine on gentle cycle with down-specific detergent like Nikwax Down Wash. Avoid top-loading machines with agitators, which can tear baffles or strip the hydrophobic treatment. Rinse twice to remove all detergent residue. Dry on low heat with two clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps and restore loft. Expect 2–3 hours of drying time. The bag must be completely dry before storage or the down will mildew.

Yes, the Regular fits users up to 6 feet tall comfortably. The internal length is 78 inches, giving you 2 inches of clearance at 6 feet. If you're over 6 feet or prefer extra room in the footbox, choose the Long size, which fits up to 6 feet 6 inches. Both sizes use the same semi-rectangular cut through the torso and shoulders.
