We built the NeoAir XTherm NXT Max for winter expeditions and cold-weather trips where warmth and sleep surface matter most. This pad combines our highest R-value—7.3—with a 30-inch width that gives you room to shift without rolling off the edge.
Triangular Core Matrix baffles trap warm air across the entire surface while ThermaCapture reflective layers radiate heat back to your body. The result: you stay warm on snow, frozen ground, or alpine platforms where temperatures plummet after sunset.
At 25 inches of usable length and 4 inches thick when fully inflated, the XTherm NXT Max balances packability with comfort. WingLock valves let you dial pressure in seconds, and the included Vortex pump sack means you never blow humid breath into the pad's interior.

How the baffle architecture works
We laser-weld hundreds of triangular cells across the pad’s interior, creating a continuous matrix that holds loft without internal foam. Each cell traps a pocket of dead air—the most effective insulation available in a packable form.
ThermaCapture layers sit between the baffle structure and the outer shell. These metallic films reflect radiant body heat back toward your sleeping bag instead of letting it dissipate into the ground. Lab testing shows a 15 percent improvement in warmth retention compared to non-reflective designs.

Width, length, and sleep-surface dimensions
The Max designation indicates a 30-inch width—five inches wider than our standard mummy-cut pads. That extra breadth accommodates broad-shouldered sleepers, restless side-sleepers, and anyone who finds narrow pads claustrophobic.
We offer the XTherm NXT Max in Regular Wide (72 inches) and Large (77 inches) lengths. Both sizes taper slightly at the foot to save weight and pack volume, but the taper is gentler than on traditional mummy pads.

Inflation and pressure adjustment
Each pad ships with two WingLock valves: one large-bore intake for fast filling, one smaller vent for controlled deflation. The intake valve accepts our Vortex pump sack, which lets you inflate the pad in 10–12 pumps without introducing moisture from your breath.
Humidity inside a sleeping pad leads to mold, reduced loft, and ice formation in sub-freezing conditions. The pump sack eliminates that risk while also preserving your energy at high altitude or after a long approach.

An R-value of 7.3 insulates you from ground temperatures well below zero Fahrenheit, so pair this pad with a bag rated for the coldest air temperature you expect.
If overnight lows drop to 0°F, a 0-degree bag works. For colder expeditions, use a -20°F or lower-rated bag. The pad's job is to stop ground chill; your bag handles air temperature and radiant heat loss from your top side.
You can, but you'll carry extra weight and bulk without gaining any benefit. The XTherm Max excels in snow camping, high-altitude mountaineering, and late-season trips where nighttime temps fall below freezing.
For summer backpacking, the NeoAir XLite NXT offers an R-value of 4.5 at half the weight. Reserve the XTherm Max for conditions where ground temperatures justify its extreme insulation.
The pad's nylon shell can slip on silnylon tent floors. We offer Synergy sheet couplers that attach the pad to your sleeping bag, locking the two together so you move as one unit.
Alternatively, place a thin foam sit pad or a section of grippy shelf liner under the XTherm Max. Some users run a single strip of gear-repair tape along the tent floor to create a non-slip track.
Both pads share the same R-value of 7.3, TriangularCore Matrix baffles, and ThermaCapture reflective layers. The Max version adds five inches of width—30 inches versus 25—and weighs three ounces more.
Choose the Max if you're a broad-shouldered sleeper, prefer extra room for shifting position, or find mummy-cut pads restrictive. The standard width saves weight and packs smaller for solo gram-counting missions.
Expect 10 to 12 full strokes with the Vortex pump sack for a Regular Wide pad. The Large size takes another two or three pumps.
Once the pad is 80 percent inflated, you can top it off with a few breaths if you want maximum firmness, but we recommend sticking with the pump sack to avoid introducing moisture. Fine-tune pressure using the WingLock deflate valve.
The 30-inch width exceeds the shoulder girth of most mummy bivies, which taper to 24 or 26 inches. If you plan to use a bivy, check its published width spec before ordering.
The standard-width NeoAir XTherm NXT fits mummy bivies more easily. Alternatively, consider a wider semi-rectangular bivy designed for broader pads, though this adds weight to your sleep system.
Yes—stacking pads combines their R-values for extreme cold. Place the XTherm NXT Max on top so its ThermaCapture layers face your body, then put a Z Lite Sol or RidgeRest underneath.
This setup is common on polar expeditions and high-altitude winter climbs where ground temps approach -40°F. For most winter camping, the XTherm Max alone provides enough insulation without the added bulk of a second pad.
