The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm NXT uses two layers of heat retention to protect you from the cold ground. Our ThermaCapture barrier sits just beneath the top fabric, reflecting radiant heat that would otherwise escape into the air. This metallized layer works in tandem with the Triangular Core Matrix — a web of internal baffles that create isolated air pockets throughout the pad.
Why Triangular Core Matrix matters
Traditional baffled pads create channels where cold air can circulate. We solved that problem by engineering over 100 small triangular cells that trap warm air and prevent convection currents. Each cell stabilizes the pad horizontally while maintaining full loft vertically, so you won’t roll off the pad or bottom out on your hip when you shift position during the night.
Packed size and weight for winter expeditions
At 15 ounces for the regular size, the NeoAir XTherm NXT weighs less than many three-season pads while delivering winter-grade warmth. It compresses down to roughly the size of a one-liter water bottle, fitting easily into the bottom or side pocket of a mountaineering pack.
We use 30-denier ripstop nylon on both the top and bottom surfaces — thick enough to resist punctures from ice crystals and sharp snow but still light enough to keep pack weight manageable. The included pump sack doubles as a waterproof stuff sack, protecting the pad from moisture when you’re traveling through wet conditions or stowing gear in a snow cave.
Setup, inflation, and field maintenance
The WingLock valve is our fastest system yet — twist it open and the pad self-inflates partially, then use the included pump sack to bring it to full firmness in 10–12 breaths. This keeps moisture out of the pad’s interior, which matters in freezing temperatures where condensation can turn to ice and compromise insulation over time.
Repair kit essentials
Every XTherm NXT ships with a patch kit designed for field repairs. If you puncture the pad on sharp ice or a crampon spike, clean the area with an alcohol wipe, apply the adhesive patch, and press firmly for 30 seconds. The bond cures fully in about five minutes, even in subzero temperatures. For larger tears, we recommend carrying a second patch or a roll of Tenacious Tape as a backup.

The textured top fabric provides grip against most tent floors and sleeping bag shells. If you're camping on a sloped site or using a silnylon tent floor that's especially slippery, place a small piece of grip tape or a thin foam pad underneath the NeoAir XTherm NXT. Some winter campers also pack snow around the perimeter of the pad to create a shallow recess that keeps it centered.
With proper care and storage, the XTherm NXT will last 200–300 nights of use before you see any degradation in insulation or structural integrity. Store it unrolled or loosely rolled in a dry place — never leave it compressed in the stuff sack for months at a time, as that can weaken the internal baffles and reduce loft over time.
