★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

We built the Air Head Down Pillow for backpackers who refuse to compromise on comfort. This ultralight pillow weighs just 3.4 ounces yet delivers the plush support of 650-fill RDS-certified down insulation wrapped around an air core.

The tapered baffled construction keeps the down evenly distributed throughout the night, while the air chamber lets you dial in your exact firmness preference. A soft stretch-knit fabric feels gentle against your skin after long trail days, and the entire pillow compresses down to the size of a tennis ball in your pack.

We designed this pillow for gram-counting thru-hikers and alpinists who need packable comfort without the weight penalty. The Air Head Down delivers premium sleep quality at a fraction of the weight of traditional camping pillows.

Down Insulation & Air Core Technology

The Therm-a-Rest Air Head Down Pillow uses a hybrid construction that pairs the loft and softness of 650-fill down with the adjustability of an internal air bladder. This dual-layer approach gives you two distinct advantages on the trail.

First, the down creates a cushioning layer that conforms to your head and neck shape, distributing pressure more evenly than foam or air-only designs. Second, the air core beneath lets you fine-tune firmness by adding or releasing a few breaths — critical when you’re switching between side sleeping and back sleeping positions throughout the night.

Fabric & Construction Details

The shell fabric is a stretch-knit polyester that balances durability with next-to-skin comfort. Unlike woven nylon covers that can feel slippery or clammy, this knit material has a slight give that moves with you as you shift positions.

We reinforced the valve area with an extra layer of fabric to prevent blowouts during inflation. The tapered shape measures 14 inches wide at the top and narrows slightly toward the bottom on the Regular size, matching the natural contour of your head and shoulders without adding unnecessary bulk.

Sizing & Fit Guidance

We offer the Air Head Down in two sizes to match different sleep styles and body frames. The Regular (14 x 20 inches) works well for most backpackers who sleep on their back or stomach, while the Large (16 x 23 inches) provides extra coverage for side sleepers and anyone over six feet tall.

Both sizes use the same down fill and fabric, so the weight difference is minimal — the Large adds just 0.4 ounces. If you tend to move around during sleep or prefer more surface area to keep your head centered, the Large is worth the slight weight penalty.

Best backpacking pillow I've owned
I've tried at least six different camping pillows over the years and this is the first one I actually look forward to using. The down makes it feel like a real pillow instead of an inflatable pool toy. It's held up through two weeks on the John Muir Trail without any leaks or down clumping.

Worth every penny for side sleepers
I sleep on my side exclusively and most ultralight pillows leave my neck kinked by morning. The Large size of this pillow gives me enough surface area and the adjustable air lets me get the exact height I need. Packs down impressively small for the comfort it delivers.

Great comfort, needs careful packing
This pillow is super comfortable and the weight savings over my old foam pillow is huge. Only knock is you need to make sure it's fully dry before stuffing it away or the down can get musty. I now bring a small mesh bag to air it out during rest days.

Game changer for long trails
After sleeping on wadded-up clothes for years I finally splurged on this. The difference in sleep quality is night and day. I wake up without the neck stiffness that used to plague me on longer trips. The stuff sack keeps it contained in my pack perfectly.

Packability meets real comfort
I was skeptical that something this small could actually be comfortable but I was proven wrong immediately. It compresses to almost nothing but fluffs right back up when you pull it out. The down stays in place throughout the night which cheaper pillows don't manage.

Solid choice for three-season use
Used this on shoulder-season trips in the Sierras and it performed great. The down adds just enough warmth that my head doesn't get cold overnight. I did need to add an extra breath of air after a few hours the first night but once I figured out my preference it's been perfect.

Good to know

Common Questions About the Air Head Down Pillow

Start with four to five breaths and adjust from there based on your firmness preference. The down insulation provides cushioning on its own, so you need less air than you'd expect compared to air-only pillows.

Most users find their sweet spot between four and six breaths. Side sleepers typically prefer more air for better neck support, while back sleepers often use less. You can fine-tune firmness throughout the night by releasing or adding a single breath through the valve.

The Regular measures 14 x 20 inches and weighs 3.4 ounces, while the Large measures 16 x 23 inches and weighs 3.8 ounces. Both use the same 650-fill down and fabric construction.

We recommend the Regular for most backpackers who sleep on their back or stomach. The Large is better for side sleepers, anyone over six feet tall, or those who move around frequently during sleep and want extra surface area to stay centered on the pillow.

Yes, the Air Head Down is fully machine washable. Use a front-loading washer on gentle cycle with cold water and a technical down wash like Nikwax Down Wash Direct.

Dry on low heat with dryer balls or clean tennis balls to restore loft, checking every 20 minutes and fluffing manually. The full drying process takes 60 to 90 minutes. Never use fabric softener or regular detergent, as these can damage the down's natural oils and reduce insulation performance.

Down loses insulation ability when wet, but the Air Head Down will recover fully once dried properly. If the pillow gets soaked on trail, shake out excess water and let it air dry completely in a warm spot before packing it away.

The shell fabric has a light DWR coating that sheds light moisture, but it's not waterproof. We recommend keeping the pillow in a dry bag if you're paddling or expecting heavy rain. Once you get home, machine wash and dry following our care instructions to restore full loft and prevent any mildew.

The Air Head Down is quieter than most air pillows because the down insulation dampens the crinkling sound of the air bladder. You'll hear a slight rustling from the fabric when you shift positions, but it's significantly less noticeable than air-only designs.

The stretch-knit cover also contributes to noise reduction compared to woven nylon shells. Most users report that the pillow is quiet enough that it doesn't wake them or their tent partners during normal sleep movement.

The standard Down Pillow uses foam instead of an air core, making it heavier at 8.8 ounces but also more luxurious for car camping. The Air Head Down sacrifices some of that premium feel to achieve 3.4 ounces, making it better suited for backpacking.

The Air Head Down also compresses smaller due to the air core, packing to about one-third the volume of the all-foam Down Pillow. If weight and pack space are priorities, choose the Air Head Down. If maximum comfort matters more than grams, the standard Down Pillow delivers a more traditional pillow experience.

The Air Head Down compresses to approximately 3 inches in diameter by 5 inches tall when fully deflated and stored in the included stuff sack. That's roughly the size of a tennis ball can or small Nalgene bottle.

The pillow will expand slightly if you don't compress it all the way, but even with a casual stuff it stays under 4 x 6 inches. This makes it easy to fit in pack side pockets, stuff into unused spaces in your main compartment, or lash to the outside of your pack without taking up valuable interior room.
