Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat | Lightweight Camping Cushion
We designed the Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat for adventurers who refuse to sacrifice comfort when every ounce counts. This self-inflating foam cushion transforms hard, cold surfaces into a comfortable seat wherever your journey takes you. Whether you're resting on a rocky ridge, a damp log, or a freezing stadium bleacher, the Lite Seat provides instant insulation and cushioning.
Our proprietary self-inflating foam core expands to 1.5 inches of loft, then compresses to nearly flat for effortless packing. The rugged 75-denier polyester shell sheds moisture and resists punctures, while the lightweight construction keeps your pack weight minimal. After decades of building sleep systems for extreme environments, we applied that same engineering to create a seat pad that performs season after season.
What makes the Lite Seat essential

Self-inflating foam technology explained
The Lite Seat’s open-cell foam core inflates automatically when you unroll it and open the valve. Air rushes in to fill the foam matrix within seconds, creating a cushion that adapts to uneven terrain. Unlike closed-cell foam pads that stay rigid, our self-inflating design molds to rocks, roots, and irregular surfaces for balanced support.
When you’re ready to pack up, simply open the valve and roll from the opposite end—the air evacuates as the foam compresses. The entire process takes under 30 seconds. We engineered the foam density to balance loft with packability, so you get meaningful insulation without the bulk of thicker stadium seats or picnic cushions.

Waterproof shell construction and care
We coat the 75-denier polyester shell with a durable water repellent finish that beads moisture on contact. This treatment protects the foam core from saturation during rain, snow, or wet-ground use. The fabric also resists abrasion from gravel, concrete, and rough wood surfaces that would tear lighter materials.
To clean your Lite Seat, wipe the shell with a damp cloth and mild soap, then air-dry completely before rolling. Avoid machine washing or exposing the seat to prolonged direct heat, which can degrade the foam’s self-inflating properties. Store unrolled with the valve open when not in use for extended periods—this maintains the foam’s loft and prevents valve seal compression.
Sizing, weight, and pack compatibility
At 13 × 11 inches deployed, the Lite Seat covers your sit bones and upper thighs without excess material. We intentionally kept the footprint compact—larger pads add weight and bulk that ultralight hikers and alpine climbers can’t justify. The 2-ounce carry weight rivals a single energy bar, making the Lite Seat one of the lightest insulated cushions in our lineup.
When rolled, the seat measures 4 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter. It slides into side pockets, lid compartments, or attaches to the outside of your pack with a single carabiner. The elastic strap keeps the roll secure during transit. For reference, the compacted size is smaller than a standard water bottle but delivers far more versatility on rest breaks and summit sits.

Questions about the Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat
The Lite Seat inflates in approximately 10 to 15 seconds once you unroll it and open the valve. At higher elevations or in very cold temperatures, inflation may take up to 30 seconds as the air density and foam expansion rate change slightly. You can also blow one or two breaths into the valve if you want faster full loft, though self-inflation alone provides adequate cushioning for most users.
Yes—the 75-denier polyester shell features a waterproof coating that prevents moisture penetration. You can sit directly on snow, wet logs, dewy grass, or rain-soaked rocks without the foam core absorbing water. After use in wet conditions, wipe the shell dry with a cloth and allow the seat to air-dry fully before rolling it up for storage. This prevents mildew and maintains the foam's self-inflating properties over time.
The Lite Seat uses self-inflating open-cell foam and rolls for compact storage, while the Z Seat features closed-cell foam that folds accordion-style and requires no inflation. The Lite Seat offers slightly more cushioning and a smaller packed size, whereas the Z Seat deploys instantly with zero setup and tolerates sharper surfaces without puncture risk. Both weigh around two ounces, so your choice depends on whether you prioritize packability or instant-deployment simplicity.
Small punctures and tears can be patched using our Universal Repair Kit or any urethane-coated fabric patch designed for sleeping pads. Clean the damaged area with rubbing alcohol, let it dry completely, then apply the adhesive patch over the hole. Press firmly and allow 24 hours to cure before inflating the seat again. For valve leaks or larger damage, contact our warranty service team—we can replace faulty valves or assess whether the seat qualifies for warranty replacement.
The Lite Seat provides a single layer of insulation suitable for cool to cold conditions, but it's not designed as a primary insulation system for prolonged stationary use in sub-zero environments. For winter camping or ice fishing where you'll sit for extended periods, consider pairing the Lite Seat with a closed-cell foam pad or using one of our thicker self-inflating models. For short rest breaks during winter hiking or skiing, the Lite Seat offers sufficient insulation to prevent heat loss through your core.
You can add air manually by blowing into the valve or using a compatible pump like the NeoAir Micro Pump, though the self-inflating foam reaches adequate loft on its own for most users. Adding extra air firms up the cushion if you prefer a less compressible surface. The valve is compatible with standard sleeping pad pump nozzles, so you can top off the Lite Seat if you're already carrying a pump for your sleeping pad.
Store the Lite Seat unrolled with the valve open in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keeping the foam uncompressed between trips maintains its loft and self-inflating ability. Avoid storing the seat in a tightly rolled position for months at a time, as prolonged compression can reduce the foam's expansion rate. If you must store it rolled due to space constraints, unroll and air it out for a few hours every couple of months to refresh the foam structure.
