Therm-a-Rest ProLite Apex Sleeping Pad

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

We designed the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Apex for backpackers who refuse to choose between comfort and packability. This self-inflating pad uses our diagonal-cut foam core to shave ounces without sacrificing warmth, delivering an R-value of 3.8 in a package that weighs just over one pound.

The tapered mummy shape reduces bulk and weight at the foot end where you need it least, while the 2.5-inch thickness provides cushioning on uneven ground. Our WingLock valve lets you dial in firmness in seconds, and the pad self-inflates to about 60% capacity—just a few breaths top it off. The Apex strikes the balance we hear most often from thru-hikers and weekend warriors alike: warm enough for shoulder-season trips, light enough to carry without hesitation.

Foam Core Construction & Insulation Performance

The ProLite Apex uses our proprietary diagonal-cut foam, a manufacturing technique that removes material at precise angles to create air pockets without gutting the pad’s structure. This approach preserves dead-air space—the actual source of insulation—while trimming weight where foam contributes little thermal benefit.

The result is an R-value of 3.8, tested to the ASTM F3340-18 standard we now use across our entire lineup. That rating puts the Apex in true three-season territory: reliable warmth on spring and fall trips when overnight lows dip into the 20s, and overkill for summer missions above treeline. The same construction philosophy shows up in our Trail Pro series, though those models push R-values higher for winter use.

Packability & Weight for Multi-Day Trips

At 1 pound 1 ounce in the Regular size, the ProLite Apex lands in the sweet spot for backpackers counting every ounce but unwilling to sleep on a razor-thin air mattress. It compresses to roughly the size of a one-liter water bottle—small enough to fit inside most packs rather than strapped to the outside.

The tapered cut shaves an additional four ounces compared to our rectangular pads, a detail that matters when you’re carrying shelter, food, and water for a week. We’ve heard from PCT and AT thru-hikers who carried this pad the entire distance, citing the balance between durability and carried weight as the deciding factor.

WingLock Valve System & Inflation

One-Way Airflow for Quick Setup

The WingLock valve uses a one-way design that prevents air from escaping while you’re topping off the pad. Open the valve, let the foam core self-inflate for about two minutes, then add 5-10 breaths to reach full firmness. The wide bore makes deflation equally fast—open the valve, roll from the foot end, and you’re packed in under a minute.

Fine-Tuning Firmness in Camp

We built the valve with a secondary dial that lets you release small amounts of air without fully opening the system. Side sleepers often prefer a slightly softer feel, while back sleepers tend to pump in extra air for firmer support. The adjustment takes seconds and doesn’t require re-inflation from scratch.

Perfect for the Colorado Trail
I carried the ProLite Apex for 486 miles this summer and it never let me down. The self-inflating feature saved me energy every night after long miles, and the packed size left room in my pack for extra food carries. I'm a side sleeper and found 2.5 inches thick enough even on rocky sites.

Warmth without the weight penalty
Switched from a foam pad to the Apex for a September trip in the Winds. Temps dropped to 28°F one night and I stayed warm in my 20-degree bag. The tapered cut took a night to get used to, but the weight savings were worth it. Packs down smaller than I expected.

Great pad with one minor gripe
Love the R-value and packability. My only complaint is that the valve occasionally sticks when I'm deflating in the morning cold. A quick wipe with a dry cloth fixes it, but I wish it operated smoothly in all temps. Still recommend it for three-season use.

Held up through a thru-hike
Put this pad through the full AT last year. Got two small punctures—one in Pennsylvania rocks, one in the Whites—and the included patch kit handled both repairs. Still using the same pad for weekend trips. The foam core bounced back to full loft every time.

Better than my old inflatable
I used to carry an air-only pad that punctured twice in one season. The ProLite Apex gives me peace of mind with the foam backup, and I actually sleep warmer. The self-inflation is a game changer after a long day. Worth every penny.

Solid choice for cool-weather camping
We used these on a week-long trip in the Sierras in October. Nights were in the low 30s and the pads kept us insulated from the frozen ground. My partner is 6'2" and the Large size worked perfectly. Only wish it came in more colors.

Good to know

Questions About the ProLite Apex

The ProLite Apex has an R-value of 3.8, tested to the ASTM F3340-18 standard. This insulation level works for three-season backpacking, typically down to around 25°F when paired with an appropriately rated sleeping bag. For trips where overnight lows stay above freezing, the pad provides a comfortable margin. If you're planning winter camping or high-altitude expeditions in cold months, consider a pad with an R-value above 4.5.

The pad self-inflates to approximately 60% of full capacity in about two minutes after opening the WingLock valve. You'll need to add 5-10 breaths to reach maximum firmness and thickness. Altitude and temperature affect inflation speed slightly—expect slower self-inflation in cold weather and faster expansion at higher elevations where air pressure is lower.

The Regular ProLite Apex weighs 1 pound 1 ounce and packs down to roughly 10 inches long by 5 inches in diameter when rolled tightly in the included stuff sack. This size fits easily inside most backpacks without requiring external straps. The Large size adds about 5 ounces and an inch to packed length, while the Small torso version shaves the weight down to 10 ounces.

The R-value of 3.8 makes the ProLite Apex a three-season pad, not a winter option for most users. If you're camping in conditions where overnight temperatures drop below 20°F, you'll want a pad with an R-value of at least 5.0 to prevent cold transfer from frozen ground. You can layer the Apex with a closed-cell foam pad for added winter insulation, though a dedicated four-season pad is more efficient.

Every ProLite Apex includes a repair kit in the stuff sack. To patch a hole, first locate the leak by inflating the pad and listening for escaping air or applying soapy water to suspected areas. Clean and dry the damaged spot, apply a thin layer of adhesive from the kit, press the patch firmly over the hole, and let it cure for at least 30 minutes before re-inflating. For best results, apply pressure to the patch with a flat object like a book or pot lid while it sets.

The tapered cut measures 20 inches at the shoulders, which accommodates most side sleepers without feeling cramped. The narrower 13-inch foot section is where weight savings come from, and most users don't notice the taper while sleeping since feet require less width. If you shift positions frequently during the night or prefer more room, the rectangular ProLite Plus offers a wider platform with only a small weight penalty.

The ProLite Apex does not include a pump and doesn't require one for normal use—the self-inflating foam core does most of the work, and you add the final firmness with a few breaths. If you prefer not to use lung power, you can purchase our separately sold manual pump sack or electric pump, though most backpackers find the breath-topping method faster and lighter for this type of pad.
